The eight-member expert team was received by Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian and officials from Malaysia’s Ministry of Health upon their arrival at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Bai said the expert team was organised by the National Health Commission of China and made up of eight individuals selected by the Guangdong Province health commission.

“They are specialised in different fields such as respirology, intensive care, psychiatry, infectious diseases, data analysis, virology and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

“Some of them had joined the fight against Covid-19 in Hubei Province,” Bai said.

He said the team will share experience and expertise on fighting Covid-19 with their Malaysian counterparts.

“This is the time when governments and the people of China and Malaysia work together and look after each other to overcome the difficulties. It also demonstrates the deep and warm relationship between China and Malaysia.

“The team will be in Malaysia for two weeks tentatively, during which they will also make a trip to Sabah and Sarawak to share their expertise,” Bai added.

The team, led by Dr Li Jun, chief physician of the Integrated Chinese and Western Emergency Medicine and vice-president of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said he felt touched by Malaysia’s warm welcome.

We’ve come here in the spirit of China’s hospitality towards Malaysia. We will make full use of our time in Malaysia and do what we can to assist Malaysia in fighting Covid-19 together,” he said.

'China experts not here to treat patients'

The team of medical experts from China will not be involved in efforts to treat Covid-19 patients in Malaysia, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said the medical professionals from China would be sharing their experiences in terms of treatment and research.

“(They will be sharing) not just their positive experiences but also perhaps issues where they have been unsuccessful in.

“We want to learn things, for example, which they have been unsuccessful in so that we do not repeat the same mistakes, ” he told reporters yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham also said that discussions and exchanges of information on issues such as treatment of patients in the wards and intensive care units, and technical application of antigens or antibodies, was important.
