Malaysia's experts urge for quick, clear rollout of 5G and MyDigital ID

PETALING JAYA: Experts are calling for a clear digital direction and quick implementation for the rollout of the dual 5G network and the MyDigital ID programme, saying that any delay is unacceptable if Malaysia were to position itself as the choice for leading industries and as Asean chairman. Malaysia, said Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) vice-president Datuk Indrani Thuraisingham, must have the proper infrastructure to support such targets.

“Since we are championing artificial intelligence (AI) development, setting up more data centres and other related fields, it is fair for the relevant authorities as well as stakeholders to prepare the right infrastructure to support these initiatives.

“It is unacceptable to delay it further as it could have an impact on our country’s economy,” she said in an interview yesterday.

Malaysia has secured billions of ringgit in investment in the past year from global tech firms seeking to build critical infrastructure to cater to growing demand for their cloud and AI services.

The Star also reported that while the number of digital nomads in the country has doubled, Internet connectivity remains a major concern for them.Other countries such as China, pointed out Indrani, have even achieved a breakthrough in satellite-to-ground laser communications that could pave the way for sixth-generation wireless technology – or 6G – and other applications, including remote sensing with ultra-high resolution and next generation satellite positioning technology.

“They have gone beyond 5G and we need to keep up with them,” she said.

On Jan 2, China’s Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co, which owns Jilin-1, the world’s largest sub-metre commercial remote sensing satellite constellation, announced that it had achieved a 100 gigabit per second ultra-high-speed image data transmission rate in testing last weekend.

In terms of consumer rights, Indrani said industry players must deliver what they had promised to customers.

“Some of the customers are already paying for 5G connectivity and they need to deliver it.

“In certain places, even in Selangor and Klang Valley, we cannot get proper connectivity, and some still get 4G networks,” she said, adding that there are also complaints of dropped calls.

Malaysia Cyber Consumer Association president Siraj Jalil said any delay in the rollout of a dual 5G network and MyDigital ID programme only reflected the preparedness of the relevant authorities.

“We need to look back at the objectives of the initiative and why it is still delayed,” he added.

“Since (MyDigital ID) will be our future digital identity and represents our position in the digital landscape, the government needs to be clear on it, especially to the stakeholders which is the rakyat,” he said.

Citing the postponement in the integration of the MyDigital ID with the MyJPJ app, he said such disruptions create a bad perception to the users.

“If we cannot integrate our ID into a multi digital system, like JPJ, it shows that is not being set up properly,” he said, adding that this should be fixed

In October last year, MyDigital ID Sdn Bhd CEO Mohd Mirza Mohd Noor had explained that the integration of MyDigital ID with the MyJPJ app was not cancelled but merely postponed.

The delay, he explained, should be looked at as part of an overall strategy to ensure the success of this feature and to improve the user experience.

Sharing her own personal experience, civil servant Siti Nor Mardiah, 33, said a few months ago, the 5G network completely stopped working on her phone.

“When I called my mobile service provider, they said 5G comes under DNB, and not them. As a solution, they told me to use 4G instead. It has been months and I am still using 4G.

“The same goes for my home Wi-Fi, the 5G doesn’t work for some reason (and) 2.4G works better,” she said.

“What baffles me is that this is the situation in Kuala Lumpur, now I can’t imagine how the network is in rural areas.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Over one million users have registered for MyDigital ID less than a year since its implementation.

MyDigital ID Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mohd Mirza Mohamed Noor said this demonstrated Malaysia's readiness to embrace digital transformation, ensuring an easier and more secure way to access government and private sector services online.

"We are incredibly grateful to our users for their confidence in MyDigital ID and their proactiveness in protecting themselves in an ever-challenging digital future.

"Their participation plays a vital role in realising Malaysia’s MyDigital ID’s aspirations, and it is clear that Malaysians are ready to make the shift towards secure and efficient digital services,” he said in a statement on Friday (Oct 11).

He emphasised that this achievement marks an important milestone in Malaysia's journey to becoming a digitally driven nation, adding that it also highlights the increasing awareness and enthusiasm among Malaysians in embracing digital technology.

Mohd Mirza remarked that as Malaysia enhances its digital transformation, MyDigital ID acts as a trusted digital key, offering quicker, safer and more convenient access to essential services while safeguarding user privacy and data integrity.

"Currently, the MyDigital ID application has been integrated with several government applications, such as the Human Resources Management Information System (HRMIS) Mobile, MySejahtera, MyGov portal as well as MyJPJ. The platform will also see integration with popular applications in the future,” he said.

MyDigital ID's comprehensive services include access to secure e-government services, in addition to banking, telecommunications and healthcare.

To register, users can download the MyDigital ID app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and sign up without visiting kiosks. After registration, Malaysians can log into various apps and portals using just one verification system, making it easier to manage access.

He also noted that the MyDigital ID system verifies users' identities for government platforms and transactions without collecting personal data. Instead, it compares details from MyKad and the user’s fingerprint or facial features with existing records from agencies like the National Registration Department (NRD) during the registration process.

"The implementation of MyDigital ID marks a pivotal step towards a more user-friendly and secure digital environment, aligned with the government’s vision of harnessing technology to empower its citizens.

"MyDigital ID Sdn Bhd would also like to emphasise and assure Malaysians that MyDigital ID does not store any biometric data of its users. It also does not collect, monitor or store personal data, all while ensuring users do not have more than one digital identity as safety measures,” he said. - Bernama

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians have been urged to register for their MyDigital ID now that the system is in place since June.

The MyDigital ID system now integrates with several government applications such as the Human Resources Management Information System Mobile, MySejahtera, MyJPJ and MyGov portal, with plans to incorporate banking and financial services as well.

MyDigital ID communication and promotion head Susie Annie Tamin said signing up early will enable Malaysians to fully utilise the system better down the road.

When individuals obtain their own MyDigital ID certification, she said, they will be able to log seamlessly into apps such as MySejahtera or MyJPJ.

“One of the benefits of signing up for the MyDigital ID is that you do not have to log in using different passwords but the one verification system instead for apps and portals.

“Another advantage of using the MyDigital ID login into MyJPJ is that the user will be auto-upgraded as an ‘advance user’, therefore it is not necessary for the user to perform another biometric verification at the JPJ counter for the purpose,” she said when contacted yesterday.

Explaining further how the system works, Susie said having a MyDigital ID certificate will protect users from online fraud as the password and certificate are unique to the individual.

For example, users lose access to their MySejahtera login when changing their mobile phone.

With MyDigital ID, the user will be able to regain access to the app and all their information there.

Last December, Mimos acting president and chief executive officer Dr Saat Shukri Embong said the MyDigital ID system would only be used to verify a user’s identity for login to government platforms and transactions, and data would not be collected.

He said the system only compares the information contained within a MyKad and a user’s fingerprint or facial features against existing data held by government agencies like the National Registration Department (NRD).

Mimos, which is in charge of the implementation of MyDigital ID, is planning to expand its registration kiosks to include both rural and urban areas in phases.

Susie said there are plans to have more services integrate with MyDigital ID but there is no deadline yet for the public to register for the system.

Since it was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in November last year, Susie said the acceptance level from the public has been positive with comments mostly centred on the technical aspect.

“Therefore, more promotion of the system will be carried out on social media and other methods.

“Most of the feedback we received from the public is on how to use the system. Right now, we are progressing to provide more information through press releases and talk shows as has been done when it was first announced,” she said.

Right now, the public can register for the MyDigital ID either online on the mobile app or at kiosks.

On July 10, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said MyDigital ID registration kiosks have been placed at 199 NRD branches and five branches of the National Information Dissemination Centre throughout the country.

So far, 465,924 users have registered for MyDigital ID. They include civil servants.
